Viton® B Hammer Union Seals for Aggressive Well Stimulation Fluids

In the complex world of well stimulation and flowback, fluids are rarely pure. They are cocktails of acids, solvents, corrosion inhibitors, and hydrocarbons. Standard NBR seals disintegrate in these mixtures, and HNBR has limits.

Technical Specifications

  • Working Pressure Ratings: 1,000 PSI to 22,500 PSI (depending on union rating)
  • Durometer: 80-95 Shore A

Applications

  • Hydraulic Fracking: High-pressure sand and proppant injection lines.
  • Flowback Operations: Managing post-frac fluids and gases.
  • Choke & Kill Manifolds: Safety-critical well control connections.
  • Mud Lines: Circulating drilling mud systems.
  • Acidizing & Cementing: Handling abrasive cement slurries and acid fluids.

Viton® B Hammer Union Seals for Aggressive Well Stimulation Fluids

1. Executive Summary: Engineered for Acid & Corrosion

Standard Viton® (Type A) is good, but for aggressive acidizing campaigns, it has weaknesses. To combat modern, complex well stimulation fluids, we offer Viton® B Hammer Union Seals.

Formulated from a Terpolymer architecture (incorporating Tetrafluoroethylene), Viton® B increases the fluorine content to ~68%. This seemingly small change results in a massive performance leap: significantly improved resistance to Concentrated Hydrochloric Acid (HCl), Sulfuric Acid, and aggressive sour gases that would permeate and swell standard FKM seals. This is the “Special Forces” seal for acidizing fleets.

2. Technical Deep Dive: Type A vs. Type B

The “Terpolymer” Advantage

  • Type A (Standard): Good oil resistance, moderate acid resistance. Swells significantly in Methanol or aggressive acid blends.

  • Type B (Premium): By adding TFE (Tetrafluoroethylene) to the polymer backbone, we tighten the molecular structure.

    • Result 1: Better resistance to volume swell in Methanol and Ethanol blends.

    • Result 2: Superior retention of physical properties after aging in 15-28% HCl at high temperatures.

Fighting “Sour” Stimulation

Well stimulation fluids often contain H2S scavengers and produce sour returns. Viton® B offers superior resistance to SO2 (Sulfur Dioxide) and oxidized sour gas compared to standard FKM, ensuring the seal survives the full treatment cycle.

Pressure Rating 15,000 PSI
Reinforcement Stainless Steel Backup Ring Recommended for Acid

4. Why Use Stainless Steel Backups?

When pumping acid, the Brass backup ring found in standard seals acts as a “sacrificial anode” and dissolves rapidly.

  • Our Solution: We highly recommend pairing Viton® B seals with 316 Stainless Steel Backup Rings. This ensures that the metal support survives the acid job just as well as the elastomer, preventing extrusion failure.

5. Operational Scenarios

  • Acid Pump Trucks: Discharge manifolds handling 28% HCl.

  • Methanol Injection: Hydrate inhibition lines.

  • Refinery Maintenance: Cleaning piping with aggressive chemical flushes.
