Tool Trap Flapper Shaft Kit for Wireline Pressure Control Equipment (PCE)

In the critical phase of wireline completions, the reliability of your Pressure Setting Assembly (WPSA) is the only thing standing between a successful plug-and-perf operation and a costly misrun. At Royal Way, we understand that a single O-ring failure can halt an entire frac fleet. That is why we engineer our Redress Kits not just to “fit,” but to outperform.

Technical Specifications

  • Standard Service (NBR): For routine operations up to 250°F.
  • High-Temp Service (FKM/Viton®): For deep, hot wells up to 400°F.
  • Extreme Service (Aflas®/HNBR): For Sour Gas (H2S) and chemically aggressive environments.

Sizes

  • Available for #10, #20, and Compact Setting Tools etc.

Product: Tool Trap Flapper Shaft Kit for Wireline Pressure Control Equipment (PCE)

1. Executive Summary: The Critical Seal for Dropped Object Prevention

In the hierarchy of Wireline Pressure Control Equipment (PCE), the Hydraulic Tool Trap serves as the ultimate insurance policy. Located at the bottom of the lubricator string, its spring-loaded flapper prevents the tool string from falling downhole should the wire break at the surface.

While the flapper catches the tool, the Flapper Shaft Seals must contain the full wellbore pressure. A leak at the shaft not only creates an environmental hazard on the rig floor but can also compromise the hydraulic actuation of the trap. Royal Way Tool Trap Flapper Shaft Kits are engineered to seal this critical dynamic interface. Featuring high-modulus elastomers and rigid PEEK/PTFE backup rings, our kits ensure that your Tool Trap operates smoothly and holds pressure up to 15,000 PSI, giving you peace of mind during every run.

2. Compatibility & Fitment Guide

Tool Traps come in various designs, but the shaft sealing principles remain consistent across major brands. Our kits are curated to fit the industry’s most common PCE configurations.

  • Equipment Type: Hydraulic & Manual Tool Traps.

  • Component Focus: Seals for the Flapper Shaft (Pivot Pin) and External Indicator/Handle.

  • Compatible Styles:

    • Elmar™ Style Hydraulic Tool Traps.

    • Bowen™ / NOV™ Style Tool Traps.

    • Otis™ / Brace™ Style Traps.

  • Bore Sizes: Kits available for 3″ ID through 5-1/8″ ID Tool Traps.

⚠️ MAINTENANCE NOTE: This kit specifically addresses the Shaft Assembly. If you need to replace the Flapper itself or the body connections (Quick Unions), please see our Complete Tool Trap Redress Kit.

3. Kit Contents: Anatomy of a Dynamic Seal

The flapper shaft rotates every time the trap opens or closes. This rotation under pressure requires a specialized sealing arrangement.

  1. Dynamic Shaft O-Rings:

    • Precision-molded 90 Durometer O-rings that seal the rotating shaft against the trap body.

    • Critical Feature: High abrasion resistance to withstand the friction of rotation.

  2. Anti-Extrusion Backup Rings:

    • Virgin PTFE or PEEK backup rings.

    • Function: At 10,000+ PSI, the O-ring tries to squeeze into the clearance between the shaft and the bore. These rigid backups prevent extrusion and catastrophic blowout.

  3. External Indicator Seals:

    • Seals for the external “Open/Closed” indicator handle or hydraulic actuator rod.

  4. Retaining Hardware (Select Kits):

    • Includes replacement roll pins, snap rings, or grub screws for the shaft retention (where applicable).

4. Material Options: Matching Pressure & Fluid

Option A: Standard Service (NBR)

  • Material: Nitrile (Buna-N).

  • Pressure Rating: 5,000 to 10,000 PSI.

  • Temp Rating: -20°F to +250°F.

  • Application: Standard land operations, slickline, and swab rigs. Cost-effective for routine maintenance.

Option B: H2S / High-Pressure Service (Viton®)

  • Material: Viton® (FKM) with PEEK Backups.

  • Pressure Rating: 10,000 to 15,000 PSI.

  • Temp Rating: -15°F to +400°F.

  • Application: Offshore, Deep Gas Wells, and Sour Service. Viton is essential for resisting explosive decompression (RGD) in high-pressure gas wells.

5. Technical Focus: The “Dynamic Leak” Challenge

The Tool Trap shaft is unique because it is one of the few parts of the PCE stack that moves while under pressure.

  • The Problem: Repeated cycling (opening/closing the trap to let tools pass) wears a groove into the rubber O-rings. If the shaft surface is rough, it acts like a file.

  • The Royal Way Solution: We size our seals to provide the optimal “squeeze”—tight enough to hold gas pressure, but loose enough to minimize friction and wear. Our PEEK Backup Rings (in high-pressure kits) offer superior low-friction support compared to standard Teflon.

6. Operational Best Practices

  • Inspect the Shaft: Never install new seals on a scored or pitted shaft. If the metal shaft has a groove worn into it, the new O-ring will leak immediately. Replace the shaft if wear is visible.

  • Function Test: After redressing, always pressure test the trap and cycle the flapper (Open/Close) under pressure to ensure the shaft seals don’t bind or leak during rotation.

  • Grease: Apply a heavy coat of waterproof grease to the shaft bore. This protects the O-rings during installation and provides lifetime lubrication for the pivot.

7. Why Trust Royal Way for PCE?

  • Safety Compliance: Our kits are manufactured in accordance with API 16A quality standards for pressure control equipment.

  • Stock Availability: We keep kits on the shelf for immediate dispatch, ensuring your PCE certification doesn’t expire while waiting for parts.

  • Complete Traceability: Material certifications available upon request.
