High-Temp Viton® (FKM) Packer Elements for Acidizing & Extreme Service

In the downhole environment, the integrity of your zonal isolation depends entirely on the performance of the elastomer. Whether setting a retrievable packer for a frac job or a bridge plug for abandonment, the Packer Element is the single point of failure.

At Royal Way, we manufacture high-performance Packer Elements engineered to withstand the most hostile wellbore conditions. From standard 3-piece sets to complex mesh-backed unitized elements, our seals are formulated to provide a positive, leak-proof barrier against extreme differential pressures (up to 10,000+ PSI) and temperatures ranging from -20°F to 450°F.

Technical Specifications

  • Material Grade: Standard NBR (Nitrile) -20°F to +250°F
  • High-Temp HNBR -20°F to +325°F
  • FKM (Viton®) -15°F to +400°F
  • Aflas® (TFE/P) +32°F to +450°F
  • EPDM -40°F to +350°F Geothermal (No Oil)

Typical Applications

  • Retrievable Production Packers: Long-term zonal isolation.
  • Service Packers: Squeeze cementing, acidizing, and fracturing tools.
  • Bridge Plugs (RBP / CIBP): Temporary or permanent well abandonment.
  • Liner Hangers: Sealing the liner top.
  • Test Tools: DST (Drill Stem Test) tools requiring multiple set/unset cycles.

Product: High-Temp Viton® (FKM) Packer Elements for Acidizing & Extreme Service

1. Executive Summary: The Ultimate Barrier Against Acid & Heat

In well stimulation, Matrix Acidizing and Fracturing impose the harshest chemical loads on downhole elastomers. Standard Nitrile (NBR) and even HNBR can suffer from rapid degradation, swelling, and blistering when exposed to concentrated Hydrochloric (HCl) or Hydrofluoric (HF) acid blends at elevated temperatures.

Royal Way High-Temp Viton® (FKM) Packer Elements are engineered to survive where others fail. Formulated from a premium high-fluorine Fluoroelastomer, these elements provide an impervious barrier against aggressive acid cocktails, aromatics, and extreme bottom-hole temperatures (BHT) up to 400°F (204°C). Whether for a dedicated acidizing packer or a deep, hot production well, these elements ensure your zonal isolation holds firm until the job is done.

2. Chemical Mastery: Why Viton® for Acidizing?

The “Swell” Problem

When rubber absorbs wellbore fluids, it swells. In a packer, excessive swell can cause the tool to hang up, get stuck, or extrude the element prematurely.

  • The FKM Advantage: Viton® is chemically inert to a broad spectrum of well service fluids.

    • Acids: Exceptional resistance to 15% & 28% HCl, HF blends, and organic acids (Acetic/Formic).

    • Solvents: Superior resistance to Xylene, Toluene, and aromatic washes used in well cleaning.

    • Result: The element maintains its original geometry and hardness, ensuring reliable retrieval after the treatment.

Thermal Stability at 400°F

Heat is the enemy of elasticity. At 350°F+, NBR becomes brittle (heat hardening) and loses its “squeeze.”

  • Performance: Our High-Temp FKM compound retains its tensile strength and elongation properties continuously at 400°F, ensuring the seal stays energized even in deep, geothermal, or steam-influenced wells.

3. Engineered Designs for High-Pressure Isolation

We offer FKM elements in two distinct configurations to match your tool type and pressure requirements:

A. 3-Piece “Hard-Soft-Hard” Sets (Retrievable Packers)

Designed for tools like the AS1-X or Model R.

  • Configuration: 90 Durometer End Elements / 75 Durometer Center Element.

  • Mechanism: The harder 90-durometer ends act as anti-extrusion barriers, bridging the gap to protect the softer sealing core.

  • Reinforcement: Available with PEEK or Stainless Steel backup rings for HPHT (>8,000 PSI) applications.

B. Unitized Mesh-Backed Elements (Bridge Plugs / Cement Retainers)

  • Structure: A single solid Viton® element reinforced with embedded Wire Mesh or Metal Slats.

  • Function: The metal reinforcement expands with the rubber, creating a “zero-gap” metal wall against the casing. This is critical for preventing the soft FKM rubber from flowing under high differential pressures in permanent settings.
