High-Memory NBR Packer Elements for Retrievable Service Tools
In the downhole environment, the integrity of your zonal isolation depends entirely on the performance of the elastomer. Whether setting a retrievable packer for a frac job or a bridge plug for abandonment, the Packer Element is the single point of failure.
At Royal Way, we manufacture high-performance Packer Elements engineered to withstand the most hostile wellbore conditions. From standard 3-piece sets to complex mesh-backed unitized elements, our seals are formulated to provide a positive, leak-proof barrier against extreme differential pressures (up to 10,000+ PSI) and temperatures ranging from -20°F to 450°F.
Technical Specifications
- Material Grade: Standard NBR (Nitrile) -20°F to +250°F
- High-Temp HNBR -20°F to +325°F
- FKM (Viton®) -15°F to +400°F
- Aflas® (TFE/P) +32°F to +450°F
- EPDM -40°F to +350°F Geothermal (No Oil)
Typical Applications
- Retrievable Production Packers: Long-term zonal isolation.
- Service Packers: Squeeze cementing, acidizing, and fracturing tools.
- Bridge Plugs (RBP / CIBP): Temporary or permanent well abandonment.
- Liner Hangers: Sealing the liner top.
- Test Tools: DST (Drill Stem Test) tools requiring multiple set/unset cycles.
Product: High-Memory NBR Packer Elements for Retrievable Service Tools
1. Executive Summary: The “Anti-Stuck” Solution
In retrievable packer operations, setting the tool is only half the battle; getting it out is the other. Standard Nitrile elements often suffer from “compression set”—after days of being squeezed under thousands of pounds of force, they stay flattened and deformed even when the tool is unset. This leads to swabbing, casing damage, and costly fishing jobs.
Royal Way High-Memory NBR Packer Elements are engineered with a specialized low-compression-set formulation. These elements possess superior Rebound Resilience, meaning they actively “spring back” to their original diameter the moment setting force is released. Designed specifically for AS1-X, Model R, and Retrievable Bridge Plugs, these elements ensure your tools run in smooth, set tight, and retrieve easy—every single time.
2. The Science of “Memory”: Why It Matters
What is Compression Set?
It is the percentage of permanent deformation a rubber retains after stress is removed.
-
Standard NBR: Often takes a “set” (stays squashed) in hot environments, acting like a brake pad against the casing during retrieval.
-
Royal Way High-Memory NBR: Formulated with a specialized cure system that maintains the polymer’s cross-link structure.
-
The Benefit: When you unset the packer, the element relaxes instantly, pulling away from the casing wall to allow for free fluid bypass and low-friction retrieval.
-
Designed for “Set-Unset-Reset” Cycles
Service tools often need to be moved and reset multiple times in a single trip (e.g., finding a leak or straddle packing). Our High-Memory compound survives repeated compression cycles without losing its sealing energy or shape.
3. Product Specifications
| Technical Parameter | Specification | Notes |
| Material Base | High-Memory Nitrile (NBR) | Low Compression Set Grade |

| Fluid Compatibility | Water, Hydraulic Oil, Crude Oil | Not for Acid or High H2S |
4. Ideal Applications
These elements are the mandatory choice for any tool that must come back out of the hole:
-
Retrievable Production Packers: Such as the AS1-X and Model R Double-Grip Packers.
-
Retrievable Bridge Plugs (RBP): Where the element must relax completely to allow the bypass valve to equalize pressure.
-
Service & Test Tools: Tools used for squeeze cementing or well testing that undergo multiple setting cycles.[1][2]
-
Cup Packer Replacements: For heavy-duty washing and testing tools.
5. Configuration Options
We offer High-Memory elements in various configurations to match your tool design:
-
3-Piece Sets (Standard):
-
90-70-90 Configuration: Hard ends prevent extrusion; soft high-memory center provides the seal. Ideally suited for casing sizes 4.5″ to 9.625″.
-
-
Unitized Elements:
-
Single-piece elements with internal steel springs or mesh reinforcement, designed for specific bridge plugs (e.g., Model G or Treating Packers).
-
6. Operational Best Practices
-
Don’t Overheat: While “High-Memory” NBR is robust, exceeding 275°F will eventually “cook” the rubber and kill its memory. For wells >275°F, please upgrade to our High-Memory Viton® series.
-
Relax Time: When retrieving a packer that has been set for months, pull slowly for the first few stands to allow the rubber a few minutes to fully relax and temperature equalize.
7. Why Choose Royal Way?
-
Guaranteed Retrievability: We test our rubber batches not just for hardness, but for Compression Set (ASTM D395) to ensure they meet our “High-Memory” standards.
-
Precise Sizing: Our elements are molded to strict tolerances. A loose element swabs; a tight element tears. Ours fit perfectly.
-
Fresh Stock: “Memory” fades with age. We strictly monitor shelf life to ensure you receive fresh, lively rubber.
