High-Load TPU Seals for Cementing Head Applications (Fig 1502)

Our Oil-Resistant TPU Hammer Union Seals utilize a specialized Polyether-based TPU chemistry (rather than the cheaper Polyester-based TPU). This advanced formulation provides the abrasion resistance of urethane combined with the oil and water resistance of rubber. It is the modern solution for Oil-Based Muds (OBM) and complex frac fluids where standard TPU would fail.

Technical Specifications

  • Working Pressure Ratings: 1,000 PSI to 22,500 PSI (depending on union rating)
  • Durometer: 80-95 Shore A

Applications

  • Hydraulic Fracking: High-pressure sand and proppant injection lines.
  • Flowback Operations: Managing post-frac fluids and gases.
  • Choke & Kill Manifolds: Safety-critical well control connections.
  • Mud Lines: Circulating drilling mud systems.
  • Acidizing & Cementing: Handling abrasive cement slurries and acid fluids.

High-Load TPU Seals for Cementing Head Applications (Fig 1502)

1. Executive Summary: Handling the Heavy Slurry

Cementing is one of the most physically demanding operations for a seal. The fluid is dense (up to 20 ppg), abrasive, and pumped at pulsating high pressures. Standard rubber seals often suffer from Compression Set (flattening) under these heavy loads.

Our High-Load TPU Seals are designed for Figure 1502 connections on cementing heads and recirculating mixers. Engineered with a molecular structure that supports massive compressive loads without permanent deformation, these seals maintain their shape and sealing force even after handling thousands of barrels of heavy cement slurry.

2. Technical Focus: Load Bearing & Compressive Strength

Why Rubber Flattens

Under the immense weight and pressure of high-density cement, NBR can be crushed, losing its “squeeze.” Once pressure is removed, it doesn’t bounce back.

  • The TPU Solution: Polyurethane has a compressive strength of >10,000 PSI (yield). It acts like a structural component, supporting the joint while sealing it. This makes it ideal for the vibrating, heavy-load environment of a cement head.

Chemical Resistance to Cement

Wet cement is highly alkaline (High pH). TPU offers excellent resistance to alkaline hydrolysis and the calcium-based chemistry of cement, whereas some fluorocarbons can be attacked by high pH bases.
