Fluoroelastomer (FKM) Lip Seals with Teflon Backup for Chemicals
In the complex world of well stimulation and flowback, fluids are rarely pure. They are cocktails of acids, solvents, corrosion inhibitors, and hydrocarbons. Standard NBR seals disintegrate in these mixtures, and HNBR has limits.
Technical Specifications
- Working Pressure Ratings: 1,000 PSI to 22,500 PSI (depending on union rating)
- Durometer: 80-95 Shore A
Applications
- Hydraulic Fracking: High-pressure sand and proppant injection lines.
- Flowback Operations: Managing post-frac fluids and gases.
- Choke & Kill Manifolds: Safety-critical well control connections.
- Mud Lines: Circulating drilling mud systems.
- Acidizing & Cementing: Handling abrasive cement slurries and acid fluids.
Fluoroelastomer (FKM) Lip Seals with Teflon Backup for Chemicals
1. Executive Summary: The Ultimate Chemical Barrier
In the most critical chemical injection and transfer applications, metal corrosion and rubber degradation are simultaneous threats. Our Fluoroelastomer (FKM) Lip Seals with Teflon (PTFE) Backup eliminate both weak points.
By replacing the traditional metal backup ring with Virgin PTFE (Teflon), we create a fully non-metallic, 100% chemically inert sealing system. This design is ideal for applications involving corrosive chemicals that attack brass or steel, or where low friction and anti-stick properties are required.
2. Design Innovation: The PTFE Advantage
Chemical Inertness
PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) is virtually immune to all chemicals (except molten alkali metals).
-
Problem: In a standard seal, acid might not eat the Viton rubber, but it will eat the Brass backup ring. Once the ring is gone, the seal blows out.
-
Solution: The PTFE backup ring is unaffected by acids, caustics, or solvents, ensuring the structural support for the seal remains intact indefinitely.
Low Friction & Non-Stick
-
Assembly: PTFE has a coefficient of friction akin to “wet ice.” These seals are incredibly easy to install and remove, even after long-term service in sticky, viscous fluids. They prevent the seal from bonding (vulcanizing) to the union face.
3. Detailed Specifications
| Component | Specification | Benefit |
| Primary Seal | FKM (Viton®) Lip Seal | Dynamic sealing, broad chemical resistance |
| Backup Ring | Virgin PTFE (White) | 0-14 pH Resistance, Non-Corroding |
| Union Compatibility | Fig 1502 / 1002 / 602 | Fits standard housings |
| Design | Lip Seal (U-Cup) | Pressure Energized |
| Pressure Rating | Up to 10,000 PSI | (PTFE has lower yield than steel) |
| Temp Range | -15°F to +400°F | Limited by FKM |
4. Engineering Note: Pressure Limitations
⚠️ NOTE: While PTFE is chemically superior, it is physically softer than Brass or Steel. For pressures exceeding 10,000 PSI or excessive heat (>350°F), Glass-Filled PTFE or PEEK backups may be required to prevent creep. This product is optimized for Chemical Compatibility over extreme pressure.
5. Target Applications
-
Chemical Injection Skids: Handling pure corrosion inhibitors, biocides, and scale inhibitors.
-
Acid Transfer: Low-to-medium pressure transfer of pure acids.
-
Food & Pharma Grade: (If FDA compliant rubber is used) for clean applications where metal contamination is prohibited.
