DWS 3-5/8″ Compact Setting Tool Redress Kit | Owen® Style Compatible

In the critical phase of wireline completions, the reliability of your Pressure Setting Assembly (WPSA) is the only thing standing between a successful plug-and-perf operation and a costly misrun. At Royal Way, we understand that a single O-ring failure can halt an entire frac fleet. That is why we engineer our Redress Kits not just to “fit,” but to outperform.

Technical Specifications

  • Standard Service (NBR): For routine operations up to 250°F.
  • High-Temp Service (FKM/Viton®): For deep, hot wells up to 400°F.
  • Extreme Service (Aflas®/HNBR): For Sour Gas (H2S) and chemically aggressive environments.

Sizes

  • Available for #10, #20, and Compact Setting Tools etc.

Product: DWS 3-5/8″ Compact Setting Tool Redress Kit | Owen® Style Compatible

1. Executive Summary: The Heavy-Duty “Shorty” for Large Casing

When operating in 5-1/2″ to 9-5/8″ casing strings with restricted lubricator height, standard #20 setting tools are often too long. The 3-5/8″ Compact Setting Tool (often referred to as the Owen® Style 3.625″ Shorty) solves this problem. At less than half the length of a standard Baker #20, it navigates doglegs and deviations with ease while delivering a massive 60,000 lbs of setting force.

Our DWS 3-5/8″ Compact Redress Kits are engineered to restore these high-capacity tools to peak performance. Containing premium O-rings and backup rings manufactured to strict aerospace tolerances, these kits ensure that your compact tool can withstand the intense pressures of a heavy-duty power charge without “presetting” or leaking during pump-down.

2. Compatibility & Identification Guide

This kit is NOT for the common 1-11/16″ or 2-1/8″ compact tools. It is designed for the larger, heavy-duty 3-5/8″ OD tool.

  • Tool OD: 3-5/8″ (3.625″ / 92mm).

  • Style: Owen® Style Compact (Model SET-3625 Compatible).

  • Equivalent Models: Synergy Industries™ 3-5/8″ Compact, Core Lab™ 3.625″ Shorty.

  • Primary Application: Setting large bore Frac Plugs, Cast Iron Bridge Plugs (CIBP), and Cement Retainers in 5.5″ casing and larger.

  • Stroke Length: Typically 10 inches.

⚠️ CRITICAL CHECK: Please verify your tool OD is 3.625″. Do not confuse this with the standard Baker #20 E-4 tool (which is much longer) or the smaller 2-1/8″ Shorty.

3. Kit Contents: A Complete Rebuild Solution

The 3-5/8″ Compact tool relies on a balanced piston design.[3] Our kit includes every seal required for a complete redress:

  1. Top & Bottom Piston Seals:

    • Dynamic O-Rings: High-modulus seals designed to maintain pressure during the 10-inch stroke.

    • PTFE Backup Rings: Critical for bridging the extrusion gap under 60,000 lbs of force.

  2. Firing Head Interface Seals:

    • Seals for the unique Owen-style firing head adapter.

  3. Cylinder Connector Seals:

    • Static O-rings for the connection between the Top Cylinder and Bottom Cylinder.

  4. Floating Piston / Oil Chamber Seals:

    • Ensures isolation between the wellbore fluid and the hydraulic oil dampening chamber.

  5. Shear Screw O-Rings: (Where applicable).

4. Material Options: Tailored for the Wellbore

Option A: Standard Service (NBR)

  • Material: 90 Durometer Nitrile (Buna-N).

  • Temp Rating: -20°F to +250°F (-29°C to +121°C).

  • Application: Standard pump-down operations, vertical wells, and routine plug-and-perf. Our NBR is formulated for high abrasion resistance against proppant.

Option B: High-Temp / Sour Service (Viton®)

  • Material: Genuine Viton® (FKM).

  • Temp Rating: -15°F to +400°F (-26°C to +204°C).

  • Application: Deep HPHT wells or wells with potential H2S (Sour Gas) exposure.

  • Performance: Viton® maintains its elasticity at 350°F+, preventing the seals from hardening and failing to hold the setting pressure.

5. Technical Focus: Anti-Preset Reliability

One of the main features of the 3-5/8″ Compact tool is its Pressure Balanced Design, which prevents high hydrostatic pressure from accidentally setting the plug.

  • The Seal Role: This balance relies entirely on the integrity of the Floating Piston Seals. If these seals leak, hydrostatic pressure can enter the atmospheric chamber, potentially causing a disastrous preset while running in the hole.

  • Our Guarantee: Royal Way kits use Precision-Molded seals with strict quality control to ensure 100% isolation of the atmospheric chamber, guaranteeing safety at depth.

6. Operational Best Practices

  • Oil Fill: The 3-5/8″ Compact tool has a smaller oil volume than a standard #20 tool. Bleeding air is critical. Even a small air pocket can significantly reduce the effective stroke length.

  • Inspect Cylinder Bore: Due to the short overlap of the pistons, any scoring on the cylinder ID can cause immediate seal failure. Inspect visually before every redress.[4]

  • Backup Ring Orientation: Ensure the curved (concave) side of the backup ring faces the O-ring to provide proper support.
