3-Piece Packer Element Sets | NBR, HNBR & Viton® Options
In the downhole environment, the integrity of your zonal isolation depends entirely on the performance of the elastomer. Whether setting a retrievable packer for a frac job or a bridge plug for abandonment, the Packer Element is the single point of failure.
At Royal Way, we manufacture high-performance Packer Elements engineered to withstand the most hostile wellbore conditions. From standard 3-piece sets to complex mesh-backed unitized elements, our seals are formulated to provide a positive, leak-proof barrier against extreme differential pressures (up to 10,000+ PSI) and temperatures ranging from -20°F to 450°F.
Technical Specifications
- Material Grade: Standard NBR (Nitrile) -20°F to +250°F
- High-Temp HNBR -20°F to +325°F
- FKM (Viton®) -15°F to +400°F
- Aflas® (TFE/P) +32°F to +450°F
- EPDM -40°F to +350°F Geothermal (No Oil)
Typical Applications
- Retrievable Production Packers: Long-term zonal isolation.
- Service Packers: Squeeze cementing, acidizing, and fracturing tools.
- Bridge Plugs (RBP / CIBP): Temporary or permanent well abandonment.
- Liner Hangers: Sealing the liner top.
- Test Tools: DST (Drill Stem Test) tools requiring multiple set/unset cycles.
Product: 3-Piece Packer Element Sets | NBR, HNBR & Viton® Options
1. Executive Summary: The Industry Standard for Versatile Isolation
The 3-Piece Packer Element Set is the most widely used sealing configuration for retrievable packers and bridge plugs. Its proven design offers the optimal balance between sealing capability and retrievability.
At Royal Way, we offer these sets in three premium material grades—NBR, HNBR, and Viton®—to suit every wellbore environment, from standard shallow wells to deep, hostile HPHT (High-Pressure High-Temperature) applications. Whether you are running a standard production packer or a service tool for acidizing, our element sets provide the positive zonal isolation you need to secure your well.
2. System Mechanics: The “Hard-Soft-Hard” Advantage
Our 3-piece sets utilize a scientifically engineered Durometer Staging System (typically 90-70-90 Shore A) to manage high differential pressures.
-
The Center (Spacer) Element:
-
Hardness: 70 Durometer (Softer).
-
Function: This element energizes first. Its elasticity allows it to flow into casing irregularities and pits, creating the primary liquid-tight seal.
-
-
The End Elements:
-
Hardness: 90 Durometer (Harder).
-
Function: These rigid elements expand to bridge the gap between the tool and the casing wall. They act as a Backup System, preventing the softer center element from extruding (flowing) out of the seal area under high pressure.
-
3. Material Selection: Choose Your Performance Level
We stock element sets in three distinct compounds to match your specific downhole conditions:
🟢 Option A: Standard Service (NBR / Nitrile)
-
Color: Black.
-
Temp Rating: -20°F to +250°F (-29°C to +121°C).
-
Best For: Standard oil and gas production, vertical wells, water injection.
-
Why Choose: The most cost-effective solution. Our high-modulus NBR offers excellent resistance to abrasion and compression set in non-corrosive environments.
🔵 Option B: High-Temp / Sour Gas (HNBR)
-
Color: Black (Green dot/stripe identification).
-
Temp Rating: -20°F to +325°F (-29°C to +163°C).
-
Best For: Wells with moderate Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S), deeper formations, or longer duration sets.
-
Why Choose: HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile) bridges the gap between NBR and Viton. It is mechanically tougher than NBR and resists chemical degradation in sour environments.
🟠 Option C: Extreme Service (FKM / Viton®)
-
Color: Black (White dot) or Brown/Orange.
-
Temp Rating: -15°F to +400°F (-26°C to +204°C).
-
Best For: Acidizing Operations, deep gas wells, hot oiling, and high-concentration chemical injection.
-
Why Choose: Unmatched resistance to heat and chemicals. If you are pumping acid or operating in a “hot kitchen,” Viton® is mandatory to prevent element swelling and failure.
4. Compatibility & Applications
Our sets are dimensionally engineered to serve as Drop-In Replacements for the industry’s most common tools:
-
Tool Styles:
-
AS1-X & AS1-R Retrievable Packers.
-
Model R Double-Grip Packers.
-
AD-1 Tension Packers.
-
Mechanically Set Bridge Plugs (RBP).
-
-
Casing Sizes:
-
Available for 4-1/2″, 5-1/2″, 7″, and 9-5/8″ Casing.
-
Custom sizes available upon request.
-
5. Operational Benefits
-
Superior “Memory” (Retrievability): One of the biggest risks with retrievable packers is the element not relaxing after the job, causing the tool to get stuck. Royal Way elements are formulated for high Rebound Resilience, ensuring they retract to their original OD for easy retrieval.
-
Anti-Swab Design: The chamfered edges on our End Elements allow for smoother running in and pulling out of the hole, reducing the piston effect (swabbing).
